Curious about vaginal ring options for birth control(contraceptive) in Orange County? There are 2 kinds of birth control vaginal rings for women: NuvaRing & ANNOVERA. Both Nuvaring and Annovera are a small, flexible ring inside your vagina, and it prevents pregnancy 24/7 by releasing hormones.
- Nuvaring is a monthly ring where you pick up monthly at your local pharmacy.
- Annovera is a yearly ring.
Similar to combination birth control pills, the vaginal ring prevents pregnancy by releasing hormones into your body. The hormones suppress ovulation — keeping your ovaries from releasing an egg.
The vaginal ring is placed in the vagina for three weeks, and then it is removed it to allow menses to occur the last week (week 4). You repeat the cycle with a new Nuvaring or the same Annovera, which has a special case for you to store each time.
Common side effects
- Breakthrough bleeding or spotting
- Vaginal infection or irritation
- Increased vaginal discharge
- Headache/Nausea
- Breast tenderness
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
Do not use a vaginal ring if you are prone to blood clots, a smoker, over 35 years old or have other underlying conditions. Contraceptives do not protect against HIV infection (AIDS) and other sexually transmitted infections.
